This May, stop on by the historic Mission Playhouse in the beautiful Mission District in San Gabriel. A celebration of Asian Pacific American culture, the Asian Pacific American Festival is currently underway and runs through Saturday, May 26th! The festival consists of over 20 events: workshops (Tai-chi, Martial Arts, Floral Arts, Cantonese Opera, Writing, Scholar for a Day), film screenings, performances, a symposium, and a Family Day at Playhouse Plaza on Mother's Day. All events are free! Reserve your spot today at apafest.org.

Family Day begins at 12:00pm this Sunday. Watch cultural performances on our outdoor stage (starting at 1:00pm), learn about community organizations, and make your mom a beautiful handmade bouquet! Emmy award-winning composer Nathan Wang brings a specially commissioned concert to the main stage of the Playhouse at 3:30pm.

The APA Festival includes 2 film screenings: legendary Chinese filmmaker King Hu's 1967 martial arts masterpiece, Dragon Inn Thursday, May 17th at 7:30pm and an outdoor screening of Frank Lin's 2005 romantic comedy American Fusion starring Sylvia Chang and Esai Morales Sunday, May 20th at 8:00pm.

The festival comes to a close Saturday, May 26th at 6:30pm with a Signature Event. Artists from the Perfect Harmony Cultural Exchange Association will perform excerpts from famous Cantonese Operas including The Peony Pavilion. Stories collected from our community will be dramatized on stage by directors Ray Rochelle (San Gabriel Valley Music Theatre) and John Miyasaki (Here and Now Theatre Company). Actress and former East West Players Education Director Marilyn Tokuda will direct Tam Tran Goes To Washington, the true story of a Vietnamese refugee who spoke before Congress in 2010 in support of the DREAM Act. The event also includes a tribute to March Fong Eu, five-time California Secretary of State.
