The Discovery Center is open to users of all ages. Visit the space to discover new technology, experience virtual reality, and create new things.
HOURS AND USE
During regular Library hours, the Discovery Center is open:
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays: 10am-4pm
Reservations for each piece of equipment are taken on a first-come, first-served basis and can be made up to one day in advance.
To make a reservation for a piece of equipment, call the Teen Desk at (626) 570-5008 x5608. Reservations will be available until 1 hour prior to the Discovery Center closing time.
In order to use the Discovery Center, you will need to turn in a completed waiver. Anyone under the age of 18 will need a parent/legal guardian's signature.
EQUIPMENT
Current equipment in the Discovery Center include a Cricut Maker, LulzBot 3d Printers, computerized Brother sewing machines, Makey Makey circuit kits, and more!
EQUIPMENT GUIDELINES
3D Printers
- Use of the 3D printer costs $0.50 per half hour of printing time, as estimated by the printing program. This is the cost of the filament used to print the object. The minimum charge is $0.50.
- The cost is subject to change; changes will be posted in the Discovery Center.
- Users may bring in their own filament and use the machine free of charge. Filament must be approved by a qualified Library staff member prior to use.
- The Library does not guarantee the success of a printed object. There will be no refunds for unsuccessful prints.
- Prints must be started at a minimum of 1 hour before the Discovery Center closes.
- If the print job is under one hour, the user must remain onsite to monitor the job. If the print job is over one hour, the user must remain for the first 30 minutes.
- Qualified Library staff or volunteers must approve the print job before it is sent to the printer.
- Items printed on the 3D printers that are not picked up within 7 days of completion will become property of the Library. Items must be picked up by the individual who made the print reservation.
Cricut Maker
- There is no charge to use the software or the Cricut machine.
- Users must provide their own materials to cut or design.
- Materials must be approved by a qualified Library staff member prior to use.
- May only be reserved for 2 hours per day. Time may be extended if there are no other pending reservations.
Oculus Rift and Oculus Go Virtual Reality Machines
- May only be used by those aged 13 and older.
- Users must sign an additional waiver before using VR equipment.
- May only be reserved in 20 m
inute intervals. Time may be extended if there are no other pending reservations.
Sewing Machines
- Users must bring their own notions, fabric, thread, and other materials.
- Library will provide machine needles.
- May only be reserved for 2 hours per day. Time may be extended if there are no other pending reservations.
Computers/Laptops/iPads
- Library computers and laptops cannot store any personal files. Users must bring a USB flash drive with their files on use of any of the Discovery Center computers or laptops. Flash drives are available for purchase at the Library's bookstore or at the Circulation desk.
- Laptops and iPads are not connected to Library printers. If you would like to print something, you must log into a Library PC using your Library card.
- Laptops and iPads must remain in the Discovery Center at all times.
- Laptops and iPads are intended to be used in conjunction with Discovery Center equipment.
- Users cannot download new apps or sign into personal accounts on iPads.
Button Maker
- Patrons may bring or create printed images to use in the button maker.
- Images can be printed from Library PCs. The charge for printing is $0.15 per page for black and white, $0.30 per page for color.
- Fee for each item made is $0.25 for the cost of supplies. The cost is subject to change; changes will be posted in the Discovery Center.
